On November 14, 1998 at the Lee University Homecoming, Pi Kappa Pi honored its first honorary member by dedicating a memorial flagpole courtyard to Lee University in recognition of Dr. Butler's leadership and talents given to the university.

Dr. Butler's widow Sybil was on hand to help cut the ribbon of a memorial flagpole surrounded by shrubs, benches and a memorial plaque. Butler was a long time faculty member and administrator who died in 1992. Pi raised more than $13,000 to complete the project. (Photo taken from the Winter 1999 Torch.)
